Our Mission

Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism offers hope to people with autism and their families by providing high quality, life-long support through services which enable people with autism to function better in everyday life. NSSA offers the most advanced treatment and training programs for the benefit of people with autism, and will continue to pioneer, through research, comprehensive treatment models that can be adopted nationally.

Our Philosophy

At NSSA we believe that each individual with autism, as well as their family members, deserves access to resources that will help them maximize their full potential. NSSA is dedicated to developing and providing those resources so that individuals with autism will be able to live lives filled with promise, dignity, and purpose and their families will have hope as well as peace of mind.

In January 1993, NSSA was proud to open The Martin C. Barell School, named in honor of then New York State Board of Regents Chancellor, Martin C. Barell. Chancellor Barell shared our vision and advocated for our programs to the New York State Education Department. The Martin C. Barell School provides a full-day, twelve-month program for school age children ranging in age from five to twenty-one years. It enrolls a maximum of twenty-five students, with an instructor-to-student ratio of 1 to 1.5. The small size and high teacher-to-student ratio are integral to achieving optimal results for each student. They allow for the promotion of a significant degree of individualization of each student’s program, curriculum, reinforcement, and motivation systems, as well as intensive clinical oversight and on-going data analysis.

The highly structured program is based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), in which each child has behaviorally defined and measurable goals. Each child’s progress is reviewed regularly so that if the child is not learning, adaptations to the teaching procedure can be made immediately. On-going assessment of each student’s reinforcement preferences leads to the development of highly individualized motivation systems for all students. Ultimately self-monitoring, or the ability to deliver one’s own reinforcement in the absence of teacher supervision, is the goal.

Students receive instruction in a variety of settings (i.e. in the classroom, at home, and in the community). Student-to-teacher ratios are based on the individual needs of each student. Some receive instruction on a one-to-one basis for some or part of their day, others are taught in small groups, and still others are slowly integrated into public school special or regular education classrooms in their home district.

Each student’s program is designed to teach pre-academic and academic skills, communication, recreation, socialization, and daily living skills. Depending on the needs of the student, behavior reduction plans to reduce and replace inappropriate behaviors are designed, implemented, and monitored on an on-going basis. Careful attention is placed on the systematic generalization of skills from school to the home and into the community. The goal of each child’s program is to increase independence, communication, and socialization skills and to enable students to maximize their full potential and become contributing members of their households and communities

Parents play an integral role in their child’s education. At the Martin C. Barell School parents receive extensive training, both in school and at home, in the principles and application of behavioral theory and teaching techniques. This training empowers parents to be active participants in their child’s education program and enables them to support the transfer of newly acquired skills to the home and community. In addition, families receive specific instruction in their home on an as needed basis, to address goals and challenges specific to their child and family (e.g. eating and/or sleep disorders, aggression, dining out in restaurants, attending a sibling’s sporting event, shopping, haircuts, doctor/dental visits, etc.). Family support is also provided through NSSA sponsored parent training and an open door visitation policy.

Since 1980, WellLife Network, formerly PSCH, has been meeting the growing challenges of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and mental illness. Our multidisciplinary approach and centralized referral process help to ensure that each person we serve receives the appropriate range of services and level of care, with an individual treatment plan, coordinated by highly competent and supportive case management professionals.

In its early years, WellLife Network operated and maintained community residential facilities for people with developmental disabilities and mental illness, and to provide programs of care, service, habilitation, rehabilitation, social and recreational activities, in a homelike environment. PSCH was initially named the Professional Service Center for the Handicapped, Inc. In 1997, the agency officially changed its name to PSCH, Inc. In January, 2017 PSCH, Inc. was rebranded and is now called WellLife Network.

We at Halo Network envision a world where all people, including those with disabilities, are respected, valued, and provided opportunities in the workplace and community. To achieve this vision, we empower individuals to take control of their destiny.

Halo Network approaches service delivery differently from most existing human service agencies. The differences lie in our executive team's vision, organizational values and principles that guide service delivery, the talent of the direct staff to implement value-driven services, and a long-term commitment to the individual and family. Further, the agency embraces a self-directed process that results in a true partnership between the person receiving services and the agency providing the service.

Halo Network promotes a continuum of service, which anticipates changes in life circumstances and intuitively offers support that correspond to these changes thereby, avoiding huge time lags, gaps in services that may be disadvantageous to the people we serve. Halo Network's goals and values reflect the agency’s creative and energetic organizational attitude that is fueled by our determination to influence policies and practices that improve the quality of life for the individuals we serve.

The RCIL mission is to ensure a fully accessible, integrated society that enables full participation by people with disabilities.

RCIL promotes a dynamic environment where society and the individual mutually benefit from a world with no limits. This is accomplished by promoting and achieving excellence in consumer-controlled, self-directed services in programs, education, advocacy, research, and information retrieval and dissemination. These services are self-directed and geared toward increasing awareness of an individual's rights and options as well as the various methods to achieve chosen goals.

It is fundamental that all advocacy, programming, and services ensure confidentiality, guard against exploitation, paternalism, and segregation, thus safeguarding the principle of consumer empowerment.

EIHAB Human Services is a multilingual, multicultural nonprofit organization dedicated to serving children and adults with developmental disabilities and behavioral health challenges.

A winner of SmartCEO’s 2016 Family Business Awards, EIHAB launched in 1997 as the vision of Fatma Abboud and her son Eihab Hegazy, committed to providing a voice to individuals in need. Two decades later, what began as a small agency specializing in case management, has grown into a full-service agency, enhancing the quality of life of hundreds of families across New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

We believe every human being deserves the chance to succeed. Through high quality, compassionate care, we aim to help physically and mentally challenged individuals lead fulfilling, productive lives.

Our multidisciplinary team of clinicians, administrators, social workers and direct support professionals work together to deliver exemplary care and person-centered planning, fostering greater independence and community inclusion for the many individuals we serve.

EIHAB's Mission is Everyone, regardless of race, religion, color, gender, age, sexual orientation, or disability deserves the same opportunities for dignity and self-respect. We have a moral mandate to do our utmost to serve those in need, enabling them to achieve self-reliance and help them to take their places as productive members of society.

The individuals we serve deserve genuine caring and excellent services. We want not only to develop programs that serve the under-served and hard to serve communities, but to increase public awareness of their needs.

Adults and Children with Learning & Developmental Disabilities (ACLD), founded in 1957, is a leading not-for-profit agency on Long Island that proudly supports the needs of people with autism, learning and developmental disabilities, and their families. ACLD’s mission is to provide opportunities for children and adults with autism, learning and developmental disabilities to pursue enviable lives, promote their independence and foster supportive relationships within the community.

ACLD provides these opportunities through a wide variety of supports and services, beginning at 3 years old with Special Education Preschools and continuing throughout one’s lifespan with programs such as Day Habilitation, Vocational, and Residential Services.

What does an enviable life mean? It is ultimately defined differently by each person, because each person is different. ACLD uses this person-centered approach to listen and find out what matters most to each person.

ACLD has been the previous winner of such prestigious honors such as Long Island Business News 2019 Best Places to Work; 2020 Newsday’s Long Island Top Work Places; 2021 USA Top Workplace; 2023 Long Island Business News Top Winner – Non Profit; 2023 Imagine Award Winner for Innovation.

Are YOU ready to embark on a journey? A journey designed only for those with the ability and desire to meet the daily challenges of helping people with developmental disabilities live and learn in society with dignity and independence; to assist them in becoming as independent as possible; to lead, as we’ve come to say, “Enviable lives.” You will leave your “job” each day knowing your hard work has made a significant impact in someone else’s life.

EEDA is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides supports and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. EEDA, a grassroots agency, was organized in 1992 by a small group of parents who were active advocates for their children and believed that everyone has the right to fully participate in quality education, medical, habilitation, and recreational services. To that end, EEDA secured funding to create programs of excellence that promote life enhancement for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities of all ages.

Today, EEDA provides services to over 750 individuals and continues to be managed by the same group of parents who started the organization.

EEDA is a proud affiliate of the Kinexion Network.

ACDS was originally founded in 1966 by a group of parents on Long Island who were seeking services for their young children with Down syndrome. Since then we have grown and evolved into a lifetime services agency that serves families of children and adults with a wide range of disabilities that include; Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Speech and Language Delays, and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).

Our programs are delivered in a variety of settings, beginning with our educational center and flagship preschool in Plainview Long Island. Our recent expansion has included a special needs preschool in Westchester County and two adult Day Habilitation programs in Plainview and Merrick LI. We also continue to provide high quality services in the family’s home, in community based programs and in our Individualized Residential Alternative group homes (IRAs) with a current capacity to serve more than one thousand people across all of our programs.

The continuity of service that we offer is one of the unique characteristics of ACDS. A great percentage of our teens and adults started with ACDS in early childhood in classes that were staffed by teachers, assistants and therapists, many of whom are still with ACDS to this day. These dedicated individuals are committed to our mission in a way that is best appreciated by visiting our facilities and observing the patient, caring, nurturing approach with which our staff and administration conduct themselves. When we refer to the ACDS family, it is more than a cliché. We are in a unique position to help complete the “Circle of Life” for our families.

Regardless of the program type or size, our services are designed with the individual in mind. There are no cookie cutters in our tool bag. All of our activities; educational, recreational, therapeutic, and social, focus on the unique characteristics and abilities of the person we are serving. There is one goal and that is to help that individual develop to their full potential. We bring a wealth of experience, developed over nearly a half century, to the job every day. And we are proud to say that our greatest reward is having families share their stories of how ACDS has made a difference in their lives.

ACDS is a 501(c)(3) corporation that relies primarily on government funding. However we remain dependent on private support to fill the gap between public funding and our operating budget – and that gap is ever growing in the face of federal and state budget cuts.

*Self-Direction: An Alternative to Traditional Agency Employment

Direct Support Professionals can choose to work directly, one-on-one for people who "self-direct" their services. This means that the person who receives services is given a personal annual budget that they can use to pay for services and hire their own staff. In this instance, a service provider agency offers self-directing people "Fiscal Intermediary" services in which the service provider serves as the "employer of record" and administers the person's budget, staff payments, tax and paycheck deductions. If you think you may be interested in working in this way for a person who self-directs, be sure to search for provider agencies on this website that offer Fiscal Intermediary services. You can contact those agencies directly to inquire about working as a Direct Support Professional for someone who self-directs their services.
